History of the Westin Great Southern Columbus

The Westin Great Southern Columbus or previously known as the Great Southern Fireproof Hotel and Opera House was built in 1897 during a time of uncertainty due to fires that destroyed many buildings in Columbus. The word fireproof in its name was highly appreciated due to its use of steel, brick, and concrete construction. The hotel’s strength is equally paired with its beauty; a fine example of the best French Renaissance Architecture of its time (and today). The Grand Ballroom had no expenses spared during construction, the floors are made of the original 125 year old Italian marble. The hotel is officially the oldest hotel still remaining in the Columbus area, even the stained glass windows are original to 1897.
